Does that question come to your mind, Let Me help You. Kinda.I will be speaking from my on extensive personal experience on Micorsofts WindowsXP . So lets make this clear this information is for WindowsXP only,,, as Microsofts Vista has decided to change things up a little bit as to where it keeps things . When I get it nailed down I will report back to you.
So lets figure a few things out.
The my documents folder should contain most of the items you want to back up. RIghhhht.!!!
well mostly.
In the following example WindowsXP is installed on the default C Drive .
If you have it installed on a different location then substitues your drive letter .
There is also the
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\
This is where a lot of programs store there day to day usage data. So you will want to back this area up as well just in case.
Programs such as Firefox keeps your profile data in a folder. If you back up the “Application Data” folder than you will have a copy of this with you.
If you want to keep your usernames,saved passwords, browsing history, links ,favorites and you use Firefox be sure to grab this folder for sure.It is located at
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\{random name}.Default
Another are that I Always make sure I have a good back up is my Itunes music library’s vast ratings and album art that I have collected and spent time on is in your My Music Folder it is usually located in this area
C:\Documents and Settings\USER\My Documents\My Music\Itunes
Grab/Copy that whole folder and you will have all of the Itunes ratings album art and other such items great stuff needed to have a wonderfull restore adventure. In that folder you will find a file named Itunes Library.itl and Itunes music library.xml .These are both really good things to have a backup of.
I also Backup my Trillian logs/folder for trillian i grab the entire folder out of the
C:\Program Files\Trillian
It will includes any plugins you may have added your previous chats , any renames you may have done to keep IM names
if you want just the previous logs they are broken down by im client in
C:\Program Files\Trillian\users\default\logs
Your checklist to making a good backup.
All Programs are closed this is to ensure that any of the programs from with you may be backing up data can take all the files that they may need.
Were are you going to back up have a destination ready be it CD DVD external hard drive
